Ride Summary:
Short or long loops on jeep trails. Nice to start the season with.
Trail Description:
To begin, gosouth on the gravel road into Rock Flat valley. Don't go left but up the little hill to a left-hand junction at mile 1.2 to the end of the long loop. To start the long loop, head on the main road. For the short loop, go left on the second left (the lower road) and along the road.
Long loop: Keep heading for Fish Lake on the main road and pass the third meadow to a downhill section 5.1 miles to Fish Lake. Climb the road until you drop to Big Creek Meadows located in a nice valley. At mile 7.7 go left at a major junction, and head up the valley for about a half mile. At mile 8.1 go left onto a primitive dual track and climb up on the logging trail. At mile 9.8 go right and follow a logging road to Bell Saddle at mile 10.6. There's a five way junction. Look south, see Red Ridge? Go about 7 miles to it if you want (it's at 7,330 feet). To finish this loop, take the second left that climbs up the north end of Red Ridge. Go right at mile 12.6 and mile 13.6 to stay on the high road. At mile 14.7 you'll be high up and have awesome views. Now you get to go 3 miles downhill to the main junction.
Short loop: go up the low road a bit and go left at the first junction. Stay on the main road for about 3.5 miles to a saddle junction. Go left and climb to the top of the ridge and follow the road as it bends north. You'll descend for two miles back to the main junction. That was about 8 miles.
How to get there:
From McCall go west on Interstate 55 about 2.2 miles to the Little Ski Hill parking area.
