This is an extremely tough ride and possibly the toughest in the state.

Trail Description:
This trail climbs vigorously into the Magdalena Mountains. Highlights are the spectacular views from the peak at 9,858 feet and the trip through the old Kelly ghost town.

From your car head up the hill. At the junction of 505A and B, keep right on 505A. At 5 miles you will pass through a gate. At about 9.5 miles you will pass through your second gate. From here follow South along the crest. After a mile or two you will see a road that leads to the West. Go west here. (Or you can go straight for 2.5 more miles to get to the top of North Baldy for a spectacular 360 degree view.) This road is a fast downhill leading to the Kelly ghost town. Keep riding through the town and another 5.5 miles to HWY 60. GO East on HWY 90 for 10 miles back to FS Road 505 and your car.

How to get there:
From Socorro, take HWY 60 West for 18 miles to Forest Road 505. Turn left onto Forest Road 505 and park here.

I tried this ride on my way to Phoenix. I only had my x-bike with 42c tires. Made it up about 4 miles before severe frustration set in. The decent was no picnic either. During about the 3rd mile, it becomes a jeep road; lots of rock-filled sand. I'll try it again with a mountain bike with some 2.2's, at least. however, the views that i did see were fantastic. I went in late may; the valley was quite hot but tempered with the ascent.
