Trail Description:
The trail starts just past the two big Ponderosa Pines in the parking lot. The trail meanders through the trees and slowly begins to climb. As you enter a meadow, continue right past the windmill and into the trees. You will do a little more climbing here. The trail passes through a fence. At the fork, keep left and continue climbing. At the top you will be at Sheetrock Tank. Go right, cross the dam and pick catch the trail to your left. The trail crosses a road. After about a mile you will reach a gravel road that leads back to the trailhead. But it's more fun to turn around and go back the way you came.
How to get there:
From Albuquerque take I-40 towards Gallup. Just East of Gallup, take Exit 33 South and pass through Ft. Wingate up HWY 400. At the top, look for mile marker 3. Turn right and park just past the cattle guard.
Additional Notes:
can be done as a loop or an out and back.

This trail is part of over 60 miles of connected single track loops. A new guidebook will be out by Fall '06.
This is not a sandy trail by any means, not sure why there are earlier comments to that effect. I think they were on the High Tee, a side trail which heads north from Sheet rock Tank. Too bad they didn't continue on the Plush Trail, Turkey Nest, Y2K loop, some 15 miles of excellent fast singletrack.
The LBS is High Mesa Bikes, 117 West Coal in downtown Gallup.

This trail is 10 miles east of Gallup NM so it is about a 2 hour drive from Albuquerque. If you are only going to ride Quaking Aspen it probably isn't worth the drive. However, there are also other really cool trails in the same area that would make it more worth the drive. Consult the LBS in Gallup to get some info and other trails in the area.
