Ride Summary:
This is a long and grueling ride
Trail Description:
Breathtaking scenery and an epic challenge await those who brave this long, grueling trail. The trail traverses through the Carson National Forest with relentless climbing and seems to go on forever. The turnaround point is 22 miles from the trailhead. Lookout for hikers in the first few miles of the ride.
How to get there:
From Taos, go East on HWY 64 for 5 miles to the El Nogal Picnic Area. This is where the trial begins.

Just rode this trail yesterday and it was one of the best rides in New Mexico. I recommend it to anyone who is a reasonably good rider, likes some climbing and a lot of fast descending. The trail was in excellent condition, the weather was perfect and I will be riding this trail again.

shan-
Can't go wrong in July. Start early when it's cool with warmer afternoons under high altitude sun. Expect the typical changes in the weather for the mountains. Take plenty of water and food.

Does anyone know if this trail would be too hot to go on in the beginning of july?

Mark is full of $h!t. Best trail I have ridden in years. The singletrack is outstanding. Too much climbing? Boo Hoo! Just stay in Nebraska!

GRreat trail. Two points not made by other riders:
1. Don't go too early -- in May, there are many deadfalls and maybe some snow too.
2. From Angel Fire: go down the Ojitos trail rather than the El Nogal trail. the latter is steep and rough, the former has lots of great whoop-de-do's.
From Taos: go up the Ojito trail rather that El Nogal.

The most consistently beautiful single track I have ever been on. I only had time to ride in on Forest Road 437 and start at Garcia Park and ride down to Taos. I hope to go back next Spring and ride from Angel Fire. Stop in at Native Sons and get good directions. They will also shuttle you to the top. If you enjoy riding in the woods this is the trail for you. The bottom gets rocky, like alot of the trails in the Front Range of Colorado.

Hey Nebraska Mark,
I just rode South Boundary again, The fall colors and views were breathtaking. I would be glad to lead you on the trail so you could see how great it is.
By the way, I'm an "old woman" pushing 60.

Mark,
Ride a bit more on some mountain trails before you bite off more than you can chew. Nebraska is flat, Northern New Mexico is not. this is an awesome ride, if you're in shape. o/w don't waste our time with the "there's too much climbing" comment.
