Ride Summary:
A short, but challenging out and back trail
Trail Description:
Cebolla Mesa is only 3.5 miles to it's end, but packs a lot of trail into those few miles. You will experience some technical terrain, challenging climbs, sketchy descents and finish with a fantastic view of the Rio Grande Gorge.
How to get there:
From Taos, go North on HWY 522 for 18 miles to Forest Road 9. Park here.

Both my wife and I, in our late 50's, hiked the trail and enjoyed it. If your idea of being a week-end warrior is to go toss a frisbee around between beers and burgers then forget about hiking this trail because it is a good workout. The trail terrain is rocky most of the way with few sections that are easily travelled. You should use a pair of hiking boots and take sufficient water for your needs.
We did not see the noted petroglyphs this time but we'll save that for another trip down in the future.

I don't know if this is some one's idea of a joke or if things have changed since this trail was posted. If you park at the intersection of forest road 9 and Hwy 522 there is not an obvious trail head. In addition, anywhere that you try to get off forest road 9 it is posted no trespassing. If you drive down forest road 9 to the public area at the Rio Grande Gorge there is a trail head where the trail (1.5 mi) drops straight down to the bottom of the gorge. However, we walked 60% of the trail on way down. Granted we are a couple of flatland XC racers from Texas, but I don't think that trail fits the weekend warrior classification. It was made up of nasty rock gardens, moderate drops, rocky switchbacks, steep all the way down, and the whole trail is narrow with a drop straight down if you bobble. The status, directions, or description of this trail needs to modified because this venture truly wasted 1/2 day of my vacation. If you're in
