This trail is virtually unhike-able, much less rideable since the Cerro Grande Fire in summer of 2000. The erosion has made the trail difficult to find and filled with gullies. I wouldn't recommend using it for anything. Besides, it is officially closed to bikes and always has been. Check the Forest Service office in Los Alamos if you don't believe me.

All you people are screwed up. I have ridden this trail since 1981!!! It rules and is not closed to bikers at all. It is not "insanely steep" and if you hikers think its just for you your wrong wrong wrong. I can ride it totally without skidding out of control, all the switchbacks are ridable-totally- Those that feel it should be closed to bikers are totally wrong and should move up here to Alaska where the real hiking is-no trails!!! Ride on folks. If you disagree I'd love to debate you and ride the trail with you.

I had to comment once again... I grew up in Los alamos and rode mtn bikes on all the trails in the early 80's before many even rode a mtn bike. The comment about riding pipeline is terrible, PIPELINE SUCKS!!! It takes no skill and is just a rough bumpy dirt road that's only benefit is you can haul ass. If Mitchell is closed to bikers then it should be closed for all, its a great ride and an excellent way to come off the ridge trail back to town. If you don't have the skill to ride it then stay off but don't ruin it for those of us that do. Brando

Whoever posted this review of the Mitchell Trail must be very confused about where they were. This trail is both closed to bikes and nearly unridable with dozens of switchbacks. Hiking only. Go ride Pipeline.

Everything on this page, with the exception of the directions for getting to the trailhead, is wrong. Anyone who has ever lived in Los Alamos would know that the Mitchell trail is an insanely steep (and officially closed to bikes) trail that connects to Guaje Ridge, and eventually, to the old Guaje reservoir. Best to ride elsewhere and maintain our good image in Northern NM.

From what I recall, Mitchell Trail is not just rolling terrain. It's a single track from town that climbs up to Guaje Ridge Trail (which is another excellent trail). For what it's worth, this is the infamous site of the "midnight mountain bike ride" so I don't recommend hitting the trail for the first time at night! Have fun!
