A beautiful ride on rolling trails.

Trail Description:
Located in the Shawangunk Mountains, the trail winds between two lakes. The largest of the two, Lake Awosting, has a beach to cool off in, and several places to stop for a picnic, or to just enjoy the view. This is a gentle introduction to mountain biking perfect for your ride with a significant other who does not have much time in the saddle.

How to get there:
Take exit 18 off the Thruway, left onto 299 west. Go through town and continue until 299 ends (~6 miles). Make a right onto NY 44/55. You will drive up a hill, wind around, and see the first entrance at about 4 miles. The second parking lot is a little further down on the left. Parking is four dollars (includes trail map).

Morning Jim, thanks for the comemnts. If you look select Hoan from the categories section on the right hand side of the page of the blog you a handful of posts will be selected. Those posts discuss a study WisDOT had a consultant do about 10 years ago to analyze 21 alternative routes between Bay View and Downtown Milwaukee. That includes suspended or cantilevered options. The path on the bridge is BY FAR the least expensive option. The consultant and WisDOT both analyzed the traffic impacts of having the path on the bridge and their reports say that the speeds would only drop to 50 mph, from the present speeds of 53 mph at peak commute hours. That's right, they would drop to the posted speed limit during rush hour. Also, Milwaukee's Marsupial Bridge suspended from the Holton Street Viaduct, is often referred to as the most expensive bridge per foot ever built in Milwaukee. It seems counter-intuitive, but hanging a structure from another structure is almost always very

Ok anyone who thinks they should go for this ride because it's technical should really do some research into the area. If you approach the trail from the West by Aumick Road you are in for a doozy. It get's very technical at this end of Awosting Reserve. All around there are great views from the ridge. Last time I rode, my group watched flocks of Red Tailed Hawks riding thermal Cookware Sets

Minnewaska *DEFINITELY* has something for everyone. I think many people are comparing two totally different areas. Trails on the north side of the highway that comes in from the Thruway are more "rolling hills" - part of Mohonk maybe? Further down the road on the left side of that same 2 lane highway is Minnewaska...with more than just rolling hills! For those who thought it was lame...you missed the steep, rock strewn, rain rutted, long downhill ride that runs along the cliffs, down from Castle Point (Minnewaska). I've made the 2hr trip from home several times...just for that run! Next time, it'll be with my now 9&12 yr olds. Downfalls...driving 2 hrs to find the park is closed due to high forest fire levels, or finding the parking lots are already full.

While true that the riding isn't technical, if you want some good cross training to build strength consider this: Minnewaska's trail system connects to the Mohonk Preserve trails. You can start at Spring Farm (Mohonk) and bike any combination of trails there while making your way over to Minnewaska. At Minnewaska you can bike that trail system as well (don't miss Millbrook mountain or Castle Point), make your way to Lake Awosting for a swim (there is a change room there) and then work your way back. The views are beautiful. That loop is 40 miles (you can do more if you hit a lot of side trails along the way). Makes for a nice day of riding (recommend going on a weekday to avoid a lot of hikers on the carriage trails).

Amazing views. If you take the trail areound the lake be preparedfor some climbing, but you are rewarded with some downhills. Very crowded on weekends. wide trails

Ok anyone who thinks they should go for this ride because it's technical should really do some research into the area. If you plan on sightseeing (and believe me it's worth it) then make sure to take the Castle Point trail on the way back from Lake Awosting. You will see some unbelieveable sights on a clear day. Don't miss out on the Millbrook Mtn. carriageway either. If I were to rate this it would be 1-2 for techincal and 5 for sights.

It takes a little bit to get to the top, but it sure is worth the effort once you get there. The view alone is unbeliveable. The downhill can be fast and quite dangerous, blind turns and lose gravel, drop-offs. It can be quite intense. I personally love it.

It was alright. there's not much to it(i saw little kids riding it with their parents). it does have some great views and it would be a great place to take a date, but as for a hardcore ride, there's not much there.
