Ride Summary:
Old coach route between Flagstaff and Grand Canyon
Trail Description:
This trail is a classic and is normally done in 2 days but if you feel up to it give it a try in one day. The views will provide great company.
The route on dirt roads between Hwy 180 to the south and Hwy 64 to the north is a maze of trails and it is not always obvious which trail to take. But with a good map you should have no problems. The trail which was used as a coach route between 1892 and 1899 starts at Hart Prairie Rd at mile post 226 on Hwy 180, 9 miles north of Flagstaff. If you intend on doing this trip in two days and want to use a support vehicle, the best place to meet it is on route 417 which you will come to after 24 miles. Your support vehicle can access Route 417 via Hwy 180. Also, at the end of the 69 miles trail you will come to Hwy 64. At this point it is well worth it to take a left on Hwy 64 (South Rim Drive) and ride for 2 miles to Grandview Point. Splendid views of the Grand Canyon.
How to get there:
The trailhead is located at mile post 226 on Hwy 180 - 9 miles north of Flagstaff.
Additional Notes:
You will encounter a lot of cacti in the area so pack extra tubes and use no flat goo.
