Ride Summary:
Roots, rocks, climbs, twisty singletrack - something for everyone! Many trails to choose from.
Trail Description:
Trails criss-cross the area and they offer nearly anything a mountain biker would want to ride! Be careful, you can get lost out here. Be ready for flat twisty singletrack, big drops & climbs, roots, rocks, water crossings, and everything but slickrock.
How to get there:
Take I-95 to the Ashland Exit. It's about 95 miles south of Washington D.C. an 10 miles North of Richmond, VA. Follow 54 West through town. Look for signs that say "Liberty Middle School" and "Poor Farm Park". Turn left at the signs and follow the road into the park.
Additional Notes:
Bring a compass and ride with friends. Close to town and bring enough supplies to last the day.

A large portion of the flats area is earmarked to
become sports fields. Join our Facebook group
called Save Poor Farm Park Trails. Contact the
Hanover County Board of Supervisors and Planning
Commission and ask them to reconsider their
decision and revise the plans for the new fields.
The Hanover County Board of Supervisors recently
approved the installation of new sport fields at Poor
Farm Park. This is a unique set of trails that
provides recreation to people from all over the
state of Virginia. More information about the
proposed fields can be found on the Save Poor
Farm Park Trails Facebook group page.

I have only riden the trails three times, and they are
ok, and somewhat technical. They cross way to
much. they leave you thinking, were am I? i have
gotten lost way to many times. If you go about ten
miles down the road into richmond, and ride
buttermilk and northbank, you will have a whole lot
better time than riding poor farm.

This is an excellent little park. It is way small but the trail builder have used real ingenuity to get the best out of the terrain. There are no big drops, nor huge ramps or ariels so at its max it can only be rated intermediate. That said, however, this is one of the most fun trail rides for 60 miles in any direction around Richmond. Some flat ridgeline runs, some bridges, some climbs, some log overs, and everywhere you go is tight, twisty, in the trees trails. I would recommend this to anyone want to get started or an old pro looking to retune.

I helped forge some of these trails about 10 years ago. Just went over to ride them this past weekend (Nov 04) and they still have excellent flow to them. Some of the trails cut back on them selves so they tend to bode well for small groups of 2-3 riders.. You get a good chance to work all the rings and moves on these old and well used trails..

The trails in this park can be almost divided into three sections. The section behind Liberty Middle School does deserve a "beginner" rating, but the other 2 sections definitely do not. It seems that no "official" trail maps have ever been made. Some of the trees have blaze marks sprayed onto them, but it's almost to the point of grafitti, and there are no signs to explain the different colors. It's a good idea to go (the first few times) with someone who knows the trails, because they intersect and re-intersect a lot; and it's very easy to get turned around. However, it is a lot of fun and offers something for almost everyone.

this is a good beginner park. It's not very technical with a tiny bit of uphill to give someone a taste of what riding could be like. This isn't a park that I would drive out of my way for, but would go down with some friends for a days ride.

Poor Farm Park is one of the best places to ride around richmond! There are like 10-15 miles of trails to chose from and they all intertwine throughout the park. It has everything you could ask for;Steep hills, Long downhills, flatland and everything in between!

The trails at Poor Farm are extremely fun and as the rating i think beginer was fair for some trails but for others I would definatlt consider them advanced. If your going to go the Ron Desroaches Trail (RDT) is the best there.
