Yes you have to pay a fee. A whole $3 to a state park. That's not a fee to actually ride. Just get in. It's a tad unreasonable to think a park the size of OM operates for free. As for the trail, it has gone through a lot of changes in the past 2 years. There are now 2 new very technical sections featuring lots of rocks, boulders and drops (6'). This to go with the flowy trail around the lake and the stuff there that has been fun and challenging for all but the most cynical of riders. It's definitely worth the drive.

I didn't mean to offend anyone who likes the trail by saying that it was overrated. My point was simply that this trail is always described as being "one of the best in alabama" and I just disagree with that. If you are a local, then it is absolutely a great choice, but if you are having to make a drive, you should consider other options, especially considering they charge a fee.

(the rest of my post) All of the G'ville trails will give you a great cardio workout because they all go straight up & down the hills. The golf-course trail was an exception, but about half of it has been wrecked due to some necessary logging this year (2010). If you’ve never ridden G’ville I recommend Cutchenmine and King’s Chapel for the best non-technical single-track. For a technical grab-bag, try the Bevill, Terrill, or Loop trails. Come prepared to do some serious climbing…

(this is the rest of my post)Oak Mountain has everything a dedicated mountain biker would want, except for some free-ride features. For free-ride, the best in the state is Hurricane Creek in Cullman – next best in the Southeast is the Chunky loop at Raccoon Mountain in Chattanooga. Now back to Oak Mountain. If you’ve never ridden Oak Mountain don’t let the negative posts cheat you out of a good ride. For a great ride, choose the trails that are in your skill range. Of course, if you want to grow choose trails which are at the threshold of your skill limits…and then go for it! Be safe, but be willing to push yourself. Doing so will open up a whole new kind of riding. A quick word about Guntersville: it’s about 30 min away, so I ride there a lot. Even though all of the G’ville trails are open for MTB, none of them were designed for MTB. A lot of converted logging roads; the rest were designed by hikers for hikers. All of them will give you a great cardio workout because they a

The comments for Oak Mountain are as varied as the trails. I'm sure a lot of the riders who’ve posted to this page consider their opinion to be expert opinions. Well, I’m not an expert…but I’m not a novice either…and I’ve ridden a lot of trails. Trails which really aren’t meant for mountain bikes (like Guntersville State Park), but I ride them anyway. I’ve ridden every kind of trail and terrain available in the southeast (except swamp). Like every good rider, I have my favorites…and Oak Mountain wasn’t one of them…until today (11/28/10). It’s an hour & a half drive for me, and I didn’t have a lot of time when I got here today – so I did the Lake Trail & Rattlesnake Ridge. It was without a doubt one of the best rides ever, and that’s saying a lot considering I’ve ridden over 10,000 miles in 6½ years. Oak Mountain has everything a dedicated mountain biker would want, except for some free-ride features. For free-ride, the best in the state is Hurricane Creek in Cullman – next
