Trail Description:
There are many, many miles of doubletrack and service roads within the management area. There is nothing too challenging though you will encounter some great natural scenery and have the opportunity to put in some long off-road miles.
How to get there:
From Birmingham, take I-65 South to Exit 247 (about 15 miles). Head West on Route 17. Then shortly after crossing Route 31, turn South onto Route 261. Pass through Helena and take Route 91 South out of Helena. The road will turn to gravel after about 3 miles and you are now in the management area.
Additional Notes:
You must have a permit with you at all times when in the management area. Permits are free and can be picked up at the WeeMart on Rt. 52 in Helena.

We tried this location out for the first time this last weekend. I have 3 young mountain bikers and all I'm really looking for is some dirt or gravel away from cars so they can get used to handling themselves before I take them elsewhere. This was the perfect fit. It's about 1400+ acres with some dirt/gravel maintenance roads covering it. You have a main road that is fine dirt/gravel which makes for a smooth ride in the dirt. Easy hills at the top of a mountain (Alabama mountain that is) range so plenty of good views. Then, off the main road were some very sharp grades with rough hills for daddy to play in while the kids took a break. The end result is burning some energy off while letting everyone have some fun in the dirt
1. It's not a park. No facilities whatsoever. It's just woods and a road and no cars. I saw one car in two and a half hours.
2. You don't need a permit unless you have your ak47 strapped on your back.
3. This is definitely beginners. An

Can anyone tell me more about this trail? I went out there on Saturday and wasnt sure where trails started or ended. The main trail I saw was along where the powerlines ran. The road itelf is fun for a fast ride but I am interested in the trails that are off the gravel road. Thanks for any help. Oh my email is ehiggs85@hotmail.com.

This is less of a trail and more of a web of dirt roads. If you link all the roads together you can ride about 50 miles (easy/moderate ride). There is also about 5 miles of four wheeler trail (moderate/hard), and I've found about 6 miles of dirt bike trail and am still finding more (hard/very hard). I ride there about twice a month and everything appears to be open to riders.

If you go to www.outdooralabama.com they have "downloadable" permits under the WMA section. Print it off and your good to go.

First off, don't worry about the permit it's a waste of time unless your shooting guns or hunting. If your just riding and minding your own business no one will bother you. There are ares that can be tough once you really get off the beaten path. The down fall is you have to walk and explore alot to find the good stuff.

I rode this last Saturday (5/7/05). You have to get the permit from what looks like a Conoco at Valleydale and hwy 52. The permit is just a map that you have to sign and date. The riding was okay except for the fact that is was so dusty. We had a couple of cars/dirt bikes go past us and it felt like I couldn't breathe. Also lots of bugs when we were stopped. Bugs aren't bad when you are riding. Overall it's not my #1 choice for riding, but it is free and secluded.

I got a map/permit from the texaco station at the intersection of highway 52/261/91. The trail was wide open as far as I could tell.

I've heard from a couple riders that this trail has been closed. If anyone could provide any information to me via email ( jlemak@earthlink.net ) I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance & happy trail riding!
