A great place for beginners to have their first all day session.

Trail Description:
This is probably the most popular area for riding around Vancouver. The trails here are well groomed and moderately steep. The trails aren't very technical, but are a great ride. There are lots of trails to choose from. Fly down the steep hills, ride along the beaches then grind your way back up. It can get pretty windy here.

How to get there:
In Vancouver go West on 16th Ave. toward the University of British Columbia. Once you hit the forest park at the park's office on the right.

The Lands make for an excellent warmup, followed by a most enjoyable high speed rip through the brush towards the beach, definitely getting airborne in several spots. Leaving you at the beach is a great feature and the climb back up is a good cardio workout. I find this is a good trail to ride every other day as a means to maintain cardiovadcular condition.

During the day it's pretty easy, but the real fun is when you ride this at night. Douglas Fir is fast and fun, and at night you don't have to worry about hikers. Ride in the dark around the other trails and take a quick downhill to the beach and ride back into the city by moonlight.

Rating comes from the complete lack of singletrack in this area. Singletrack is anything UNDER a meter wide and I was hard pressed to find much at all in here which did not resemble an old logging road or a "politically correct" multi-use trail. My wife would even find it boring.Douglas fir was fun and I looped around to do it again but was constantly worried about hitting one of the many people walking their dogs(all off leash) that were out there. This place would be fun for a beginner/intermediate workout after work but needs speed to make it fun and that's a bad thing in urban parks.Setting is beautiful but the trail system is bland. What hills? Will not go back.

If you are looking for North Shore type technical riding, as I'm guessing Hardcore is, then this is not for you. However if you are looking for a scenic ride in Vancouver that is not difficult, then this is a good choice. Riding up Spanish trail from scenic Spanish Banks is a somewhat challenging hill training workout. A fun dual slalom type ride (without the jumps) is Douglas Fir trail going north to south. Please stay on the trails so that local riders will not lose their riding privledges.

I found parking at the school along 16th to be a great place to start. There are tons of 1-2 meter wide winding paths all around. Go down to the water, climb to the top, cruise the campus. there's lots of great trails. Intermediate riders will enjoy it too!
