Ride Summary:
With a shuttle it is all downhill!
Trail Description:
This trail is best done as a one way shuttle to enjoy the long technical downhill ride. This ride is mostly technical singletrack with some fireroad and many fun stream crossings towards the end. Many challenges and obstacles test your skills from loose rock, roots, waterbars, tight exposed and off camber turns, swichbacks and rockgarden drop-offs. Its an all season great ride.
How to get there:
Since this ride is best done as a shuttle, we will include directions for both cars.
For the first car: From I-210 take the Winsdor\Arroyo exit near the city of La Canada and go north to the large parking area on left side about 1/2 mile up. leave one car here.
In second car get back on 210 west in about 3 mi. exit Angeles Crest Highway 2, make left and proceed up (staying right with junction to Angeles Forest Highway at 11 mi.) proceed another 5mi to Red Box ranger station where you make right and another immediate right into the parking area.

Started at Red Box, first time. Went over map with someone working at the ranger station, she gave us a map. She advised us to go down trail til we hit Bear Canyon Trail and take that to the top of what we thought would be El Prieto. Well to sum this up, WRONG WRONG WRONG. Rode Bear Canyon to the bottom then had to hike up the other side lugging 40lb. DH bikes. Reached the top thinking we would be near the fire rode which would be El Prieto. WRONG again, ended up at the top of the Dawn mine trail. At this point it was 7:30 and dark. Proceeded to lug our bikes down that canyon roughly 4 miles to the campground at the bottom in the dark. Luckily I had hiked that trail the yr before and remembered a bit of it. Had to use cell phones to light the way in pitch dark. Very sketchy descent, lucky to be alive, didn't get out of woods til 1:30 AM! Moral of story go w/ someone that knows the trail DO NOT take other peoples directions.
Should be noted that the upper section we rode at red

The singletrack is off the hinges. As others have mentioned bring plenty of water. This is not for the faint of heart. There are some serious ledges which could provide serious or fatal injuries with any mistake. Enjoy the scenery as you won't find a better single track anywhere. Keep pedalin fools!!

Hard not to gush about this one. Part of the beauty is that in can be enjoyed in segments depending on how much time you have, epecially from the lower access, where you can experience multiple stream crossings, canopied forest bowers, serious singletrack and even solitude for a time commitment of just a couple hours.
Depending how aggressively you take it, this one can be hard on hardware. Bring basic tools, first aid, and as much water as you can carry. Watch for pointy and poisonous plants, as well as water snakes.

the quintessential SoCal ride. Best done as a shuttle from Switzers or even better, Red Box. The 4 mi. from Red Box to Switzers is one of the finest singletracks in SoCal. Watch for hikers near the campground. Some section with major exposure-cliffs. This is not for beginners but it is a great ride bring lots of water (100 oz min)
