Zion Loop

Nearby Town: Los Angeles, California
Ride Type: Loop
Trail Type: Single Track 95%
Paved Road 5%
Distance: 12.00 miles (19.31 KM)
Duration: 2 - 3 Hours
Elevation Gain: 1400 Feet (427 Meters)
Climbing: Steep and Technical
Skill Level: Advanced Skills
User Density: not specified.

Ride Summary:
A great singletrack ride but watch out for other users. Fast and fun!

Trail Description:
Start moderate singletrack uphill. In about 2mi you begin to descend and get dropped into the main creek. Cross the creek and ride 50 yards to a mild fork, Stay left going straight uphill (if you miss the fork you will continue downhill to Hoagee campground). This is where you pay your dues, going straight up about 2 miles to the saddle (very hot and dry). At the saddle proceed to the left trail heading back down and this is the downhill, all the way back to the bottom of the canyon (if you get confused on downhill always stick to mail trail). At canyon bottom, you could take a sidetrip to Stuardvant Falls or ride out, to ride out head up paved service road 1 mile to parking area. To shorten this ride at the 1st fork just before the camp continue downhill and through the campground, this trail will also take you to the canyon bottom and is also a great technical singletrack, it is just shorter, both these rides have technical sections, fast sections and good aerobic potential. Just make sure you obey all courtesy to hikers as I have heard that they are considering closing this trail to bikes. Also after a rain if you are caught riding this trail you will be cited for it. Enjoy.

It is best to get a very early start to avoid both the hot summer sun and to avoid the peak visitor hours.

How to get there:
Take 210 to Arcadia, Take the Santa Anita exit and head north all the way up to Chantry Flats about 3 1/2 mi. Park in upper lot next to ranger station (this is where ride starts). Start ride in upper corner left of ranger station and paved service road.

There's a reason for their citing after it rains - our bikes cut deep grooves into the trails and erode the hell out of them by creating water pathways and such. So it's best for everyone to stay off a non mtn bike only trail right after it rains.

I LOVE this trail! CORBA has cleaned it to make it clear and rider friendly. I've done this trail twice. The first time I took a dive off the side of the cliff with my bike. Two weeks later I came back to face it all over again. The ride up to Mount Zion is hard. I hiked mostly with my bike in the heat, so bring lots of water. The ride down is fun and challenging. Beautiful! The ride out on the paved road is steep and exhausting, but what a buzz you get afterwards!!!!

lots of exposure (cliffs) and lots of hikers. Uphill is hard, downhill from Mt Wilson is better.May be closed due to water damage.
