Trail Description:
The ride begins at the South Run Recreation Center, behind the main building and field house. Follow the paved path from the rear parking area into the woods. At mile .2, at the bottom of the hill, follow the path to the right along the South Run stream. The path comes to the power lines at mile .4. Turn left and cross the South Run stream. Head south on the trail under the power lines. The power lines cross Chapel Oak Court and Oak Bridge Place at mile .8. Follow this to Ox Road. Cross Ox Road (Route 123) and continue on the power line trail. At mile 1.2 the trail comes to a gas pipeline. Cross the pipeline and continue straight. At mile 2 the trail passes an enormous power station on the left. Turn right onto Hampton Road at mile 2.7. Follow the paved road toward Fountainhead Park. Fountainhead Park is on the left at mile 4.9 and is good place to stop and have a snack. Continue on Hampton Road to Henderson Road at mile 6.3. Turn right onto Henderson Road. At mile 7.1 Henderson Road intersects Windermere Lane. Turn off the road by the brick English Hills subdivision sign, and hop onto the equestrian trail that parallels the right side of Henderson Road. Follow the trail to Ox Road (Route 123). At mile 8.3 cross Ox Road on the Single Track trail directly across from Henderson Road (Look to the right of the yellow directional sign. The trail starts there). The trail comes to a fork at mile 8.4, turn right. At mile 8.6 the trail comes to the Burke Lake Dam. Turn right and cross the dam. Once you cross the dam, turn right on the paved trail that goes away from the lake. This path takes you back to South Run Park (you can turn left here and ride around the lake on the dirt path to add another 5 miles to your journey). The path goes under Lee Chapel Road at mile 9.7. At mile 9.9, cross the power lines and continue following the path. At mile 10.1 the ride returns to the South Run parking lot.

How to get there:
From the Capital Beltway (495), take I-95 south toward Richmond. Take the Springfield Exit 57, Route 644 west (Old Keene Mill Road). Follow Old Keene Mill Road west 3 miles, then turn left onto Huntsman Blvd. Follow Huntsman Blvd 1.5 miles to the Fairfax County Parkway. Turn right onto the parkway and go .3 miles and then turn left into the South Run Park. Parking, water, phones, toilets, and showers are available at the park.

This trail is single-speed torture! But there's also an alternative starting point that can add a lot of time and fun: From South Run/123, take Lee Chapel Rd up to Old Keene Mill, go right. Take a right at Pohick Library. You'll come to a neighborhod street on your right, and the trail lies on the far side of that street. (The non-housed side). You can park in the area for the baseball diamonds/basketball cts. One note, you will have to cross FFX Cnty Parkway and 123 a ways down, so look both ways!

when you come to route 123, instead of going straight accross the road through private property, you can turn left, and ride parallel to 123, pass silverbrook and turn right onto guage which will take you back to the powerlines.

Enforce these, not worth your time anyway.

Trespassing on private property, police are enforcing.

Portions of this trail run through privately owned property on which trespassing is prohibited.

Excellent mix of rutted dirt road(power line), paved road and slick rooty single track(Fountainhead). Great to warm up on the power line, transition into all out speed on the paved road, gutsy long rooty technical then turn around and bust the moves in reverse... See which of your buddies can hack fast pace for the return leg!

this is a great workout and for the gung ho it is possible to combine the powerlines, burke lake and fountainhead for one really killer loop. i always see lots of wildlife out there. there are also other powerlines that radiate off from this one. by the way it's in burke not annandale.
