Ride Summary:
Single track and logging roads with some steep sections
Trail Description:
The trailhead for the Thompson Loop is located just south of the Tsali Campground. Head south (following the Tsali Recreation Road) along an old logging road. For approximately 2 miles the trail follows the logging road up a gradual climb. After approximately 3.5 miles, the trail becomes single track, winding back down to join up with the Mouse Branch loop.
How to get there:
From Bryson City head South on US 19 for 4 miles. At the fork continue on US-19/US-74 for five miles and then turn right onto State Highway 28. After approximately 3 miles, turn right (at the top of a hill) into the Tsali Recreation Area. Follow a dirt road down a hill to the Tsali Campground. At the end of the road is a parking lot. A sign for the Thompson and Mouse Branch loops is on the left side of the road before the parking lot.
Additional Notes:
There is a $2.00/day or $15.00/year trail fee. Since the trails are also used by equestrians and hikers mountain bikes are only allowed on the trail Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Please do not ride after the rain.
It destroys the trails and our relationship with land managers as well as your bike

The trail begins with a nice descent then gradually climbs for a mile or two (tiring for beginners)...but it is well worth the climb for the last descent which is over a mile long with banked curves and smooth riding.

this ride is a blast after a good overnight session of rain, lots of mud to help clean out your pours and some of rocks and roots to make you fall in it! trails are very well maintained and let you keep your legs spinning. if you go to the trailhead, there are also three other trails to choose from (2 are open to horses and 2 to bikers each day, switching off on opposite days). some good intermediate climbs with fun stretched out descents. these are some of my favorite rides on the east coast. the two bucks is definitely worth it for a day.

Begins with a screaming downhill run, and ends with an even better one. Watch out for the blackberry bushes on the last descent though.
