Trail Description:
Forest Park is the largest metropolitan park in the nation. It's main attraction for mountain bikers is its proximity to downtown Portland. Since the park is within the city it is a popular after work ride and a great nearby weekend ride. The park consists of over 30 miles of trails for all skill levels. Trails range from flat paved paths to monster climbs and rocky descents. The majority of the trails however are for the more casual rider and the largest hazards are the pedestrians.

How to get there:
From the South end of Portland take I-90 North. Get onto 405 and continue North. Take exit #2B downtown. Turn left onto NW Lovejoy St. After several blocks turn right onto NW 23rd Ave. Then turn left onto NW Thurman St. Follow Thurman West to its end. Park here. The Leif Erickson Drive is the main backbone of the park and can be accessed here.

Perhaps Forest park should adopt a system similar to MMill creek canyon in Salt Lake City. They run hikers on even days and bikers on odd days. Regardless bikers and hikers need to obey trail right of way rules. Those established by the IMBA are a great guideline.

Forest Park is for beginners? Yes and no. Leif Erickson road and some of the fire roads (if you're going down them) are beginner/novice trails. Anyone who starts from Hwy 30 and rides UP to Skyline via trails, not roads, knows that Forest Park has far more to offer than just beginner trails. Secondly, I understand that most of the trails in Forest Park are labeled "no biking," but I can't figure out why. We bikers share the trails with hikers/runners, so why can't they do the same with us? Born and raised in Portland, a bicycling city, known to be liberal; I have yet to understand why people get so uptight about sharing trails. In fact, it's ridiculous. As for Swan; you know you've never knocked a biker off their bike, because if you did, you'd get your a$$ BEAT. Word to your mother.

Good for beginners or those just wanting a casual ride in the woods, but don't want to drive a long ways from the city. Not a place race. All trails are shared with Hikers and Joggers, so be cool and don't ruin someones day. Real Mt. Biker's share the trails and know when and where to ride fast.

Hey swan, I'll kick your ass if you touch me in the woods, beware of who you mess with.

If you want a little different type of riding (solid DualTrack). Head park at the end of Leif Erickson, off of Germantown Rd. and ride slightly up the road to a gate on your right hand side. Might have some trees down, but a nice ride down and back up to Skyline, or continue to bomb down to hwy 30. As close to (legal) singletrack as you get in Forest Park.

The single track trail of Forest Park is CLOSED to bicycle traffic. Lief Erickson and the firlanes are open to bike traffic. The trail frequently has families with small children hiking on it. It is not safe for bikes also.

I knock people off their bikes while running the wildwood. I hate those jerks.

I suppose being new to the area makes me naive to what Im about to inquire about, but whats the deal between hikers and bikers? Why arent we sharing these trails? If the trails can withstand the impact of the biking, then what is the problem?
