Trail Description:
This extinct volcano is part of the Columbia Wilderness Area so all the trails are closed to bikes. However, the road to the Mt. Defiance summit is enough to challenge most serious mountain bikers. The long grind to the 5,000 foot summit is well worth the sweat. You will be rewarded with spectacular views of the Columbia River Gorge.
How to get there:
From Portland, take I-84 to the West Hood River Exit (#62). Turn right at the end of the exit and then turn right again on Country Club Road. After 5 miles, turn right onto Binns Hill Road. Follow that to Kingsley Road (Road 2830), and turn left. Follow this road to Kingsley campground (which is unmarked). Park by the dam, and then ride across the dam on to Road 621 which is located on your right as you come off the dam. Ride on Road 621 for 1 mile, and then turn left where the road forks. At the next fork, stay left, and then keep right on the "main" road up to the summit. The road will change numbers, from Road 630 to Road 2821 near the summit.
