The Swamp Fox trail is located within the 250,000 acre Francis Marion National Forest. The wide single track trail covers diverse terrain and travels along an old railroad right of way. As a twist you will encounter bridges and raised boardwalk trails. It also travels through low country swampland and can get very sloppy after heavy rains. yeah...we tried to ride it in the summer- forget it. WAY to many spiders and the trail is to narrow. skeeters were swarming and laughing at the gallon of DEET i was wearing. and the swamp mud don't wash off yer bike too well. i plan on trying it this winter- maybe it will be slightly less bug-infested. but aside from that, it was pretty fun.

Went to Eastern Trailhead at Buck Hall Recreation area. Trail is not maintained, impassable in spots, overgrown with vegetation. charge is $5 for 'day use fee', but they don't even maintain the trail? all we saw was fat ranger in his truck smoking cigs. great use of my $5. don't waste your time at this end of trail. tried awendaw trailhead, lots of redneck hunters shooting their guns in the air. nice. not a bike friendly spot.

Only 30 minutes outside Charleston, and less than 45 minutes from Kmart-by-the-Sea (Myrtle Beach), the Swamp Fox Trail provides a good ride for those of you looking for a change of pace not far away from these spots. I recommend the Western Trailhead, due to the fact that it is restricted to non motorized vehicles only. The Eastern Trailhead is a favorite for ATV and Enduro riders and weekend warriors. Unless you feel a great riding day is complemented by motors quickly closing in, and then roosting you going by, I'd suggest the Western Trailhead. I didn't see another person all day on a Saturday late morning. The trailhead is a single track that parallels the road across from the ranger station, not the fire road, which I found to be someone's driveway. Ride is pretty flat, but well contoured and rutted which will still entertain experienced riders. Make sure to soften your suspension settings to take the pounding off your body. DO NOT FO
