Surveyor's Ridge Trail #688

Nearby Town: Hood River, Oregon
Ride Type: Best By Shuttle
Trail Type: Single Track 100%
Distance: 13.00 miles (20.92 KM)
Duration: 2 - 3 Hours
Elevation Gain: 1300 Feet (396 Meters)
Climbing: Steep At Times
Skill Level: Advanced Skills
User Density: not specified.

Ride Summary:
The trail rolls along a ridge top and throws a mixture of steeps, downhills and flat areas to explore. A loop is possible with a road ride back to the tailhead. This effectively doubles the distance.

Trail Description:
This is a fun up and down ride. Lots of climbs then screaming descents. You will encounter spectacular views and stunning wildflowers early in the season. If you want, you can cut this ride short by catching one of the many cross roads along this trail that lead back to road 17 which you can take back to your car.

The end of the Surveyor's Ridge Trail is for expert cyclist only. There is a 2.3 mile and 1800 foot drop on rocky and technical singletrack terrain.

How to get there:
Take Oregon 35 south from Hood River for approximately 11 miles to Pinemont Drive, which is the first left after Hanel's Upper Mill. Go east (left) on Pinemont (Road 17) six miles to the sign on the left side of the road that says "Surveyor's Ridge" (Road 630). Turn right on the dirt road and follow to the parking area by the powerlines. Trailhead is located to the left.

Rode late Aug 09 with 3 friends... My 1st foray with OR trails. Technical / demanding to start but levels out specific to skill. Several meaningful climbs if you do out and back... AWESOME views of Mt. Hood. Great shop in Hood River (MT View) if you rent. Spot on experience before heading to Bend, OR.

Saw a bear off the side of the trail today. It ran away after it looked at me and I made some noise. Very cool.

I'm gonna go ride it tomorrow because I heard it's gnarly dude! Can't wait. hopefully the black bears get out of my way...

I have ridden this trail quit often in the last 5 years. I have run into black bear on two separate occasions. luckily, the bear ran off, once it spotted me. I recommend carrying a pistol,{something with power} not a 22 caliber!!......."Oh" I can hear the earth weenies and eco natzis already... Better to be safe than sorry.

I hiked and NOT biked it but it was great for either. There is a perfect spot to camp if jump off Road 17 just a bit. I hiked to the top, base camped, and then made it to the ridge. Breathtaking but poorly marked and confusing at times. Never go off the trail.

There was a LOT of downed trees on the trail. We did our best to clear things out (what we could move) up to mile 6, but there is still quite a bit in the way. A touch of snow was left, but nothing too bad.

Fantastic ride with screaming downhills. Awesome views too. Definately do a shuttle because it's a long and tedious ride back.

Great trail, one of the best. Parked at Smullins Rd and went up 35 to Dog Creek, Up Dog Creek to Surveyers Ridge and then back down Oak Ridge. Lots of climbing, technical downhill and rolling hills. Great Views of Mt Hood North face.

Ridden once in mid June... For those looking to ride a loop and do without the hassle of shuttling. Begin your ride from the Ranger Station on HWY35, road ride for a bit, turn right and go up Pinemont Rd where you'll climb and eventually hop on a great singletrack ride up to Surveyor's Ridge full of nice climbing pitches, flower meadows, killer views of Mt Hood, an option to Bald Butte and then finally a great descent via Dog River trail which puts you on HWY35 for a moderately downhill grade back to your vehicle.

Absolutely fantistic views of Mt. Hood and the valley below. Trail is mostly single track with a something for everyone. This place is a must ride. One of the best trails in Oregon.
