This is a 21 mile high country ride.
Trail Description:
Once you complete the three mile ascent to Paulina Peak, the trail consists of 21 miles of singletrack with short climbs and descents, following the rim, and ends with a fast, spectacular descent of several miles back to Paulina Lake resort. The trail intersects with several of the parks other trails so that only portions of the trail may be ridden if desired. This trail presents many spectacular viewpoints of lakes, craters, pinnacles, obsidian flows, and other Central Oregon peaks. Riding terrain includes miles of singletrack on forest and pummice fields, and ends on a short double-track road. The riding is at higher altitudes of 6,000 to 7,900 feet and absolutely no water is available along the trail so it is recommended that riders carry the maximum amount of water possible. The major elevation gain is during the first three miles of the ride. The rest of the ride includes only minimal elevation changes.
21 mile round-trip. The longest portion of the trail between intersecting trails leading back to the major park road or campgrounds is approximatley six miles. The trail is marked the entire length.
How to get there:
Turn east off HWY 97 just north of LaPine on paved road with sign indicating Newberry Crater. Drive to west entrance of Paulina Lake Campground and park. Begin ascending toward Paulina Peak on road 500 across from Paulina campground. The visitors center at the park entrance has good maps. Paulina Peak viewpoint is approximately 3 miles up road 500. Use a park map to help locate rim trail entrance marked by signs and obvious singletrack trail. The trail basically follows the rim for 21 miles with varying views of both Lake Paulina and East lake.
