Trail Description:
The singletrack trails here tend to be very tight and twisty. Then throw in large rocky sections and you're in for a real technical treat. The singletrack is all connected and criss-crossed with fire roads that are helpful to use to keep your bearings. There are so many trails here that twist and turn, it is easy to get lost. Plan enough time to find your way back out.

How to get there:
From Route 24 in Assonet, take Exit 10 and head towards Freetown. then just follow the signs to the State Forest.

Freetown is all about riding rocks and roots so bring your full suspension. You can ride a different section of trails each time you ride here. There are several places to start from and covering 15 or 20 miles in a ride is posssible to use different trails. we like to name our favotie trails like the Ugly Trail, Break Your Bike, Bloody Ben or the Intense Trail. Bring tools and spare parts.

Great if you have a motorcycle. Very deep sandy singletrack wit great burms. The single tracks are sized for motorcycles. the north end had better trails, but they are full of washed out roots. Also very poorly marked, you will get lost, i just followed the sun until i hit a road.

Who knows how to get to the hockomock swamp? Joseph De Andrade was to afraid to camp on it with his friends, I will.

I have been riding Freetown for over 6 years now. A lot of trails, varying diffulty throughout. The dirtbikers usualy stick to the section near the gas line and Copicut Road, where I park. Not once have I felt uneasy about riding around the dirtbikers. A rider can easily hear the dirtbikes a ways away, so you can easily get out of the way or switch trail. They have every right to be there, and often open up new singletrack for mt. bikers to ride. Good trails, maintained fairly well from copicut road into the meat of the forest. Note, park at one of the gates on Copicut road and ride up the street, looking for a trail off to the left. There is a short roller coaster trail bordering the back right corner of the landfill. Awesome ride, can go super fast, and is a must ride.

These trails used to be nice a few years ago. I am a technically minded rider, I love rocky sections and hard areas, but this place has been completely ruined by dirtbikes, everything is washed out, mudded up and ruined. It is hard to get up to speed anywhere but on the fire-roads and you will be pulling off the trail to let dirtbikes past every few minutes. Its a shame, these used to be some fun trails.

This is a place that you never know what is coming up on the next trail. Lots of rock trails, and a lot of switch backs. Hold on and go for it. If you have never been here you may get lost because there are about 50 miles in trails so bring your gps if you have one and your bag of goods. Have fun and enjoy the best of mountain biking!!!!! I may look like Iam lost but I'm NOT!!!

I haven't been fortunate enough to ride a wide variety of trails (just those I encounter in adventure races or make time to check out), but thankfully I haven't had to. From my house, it is an approx. 2 mile ride to the FSF, which offers dozens of miles of trails. I highly recommend this forest for first timers up and through advanced riders. If you do some explorin', you'll find some fairly difficult technical trails. Safety is never a real issue, considering fire roads run throughout the forest, as do signs noting the direction of primary locations (ie. The Ledge, a magnificent spectacle). The point is, its a good ride. Lots of elevation changes on certain trails. Situated not far from the train tracks at Copicut St. are a few incredibly steep series of hills (mostly for dirtbikers- but fun for mountain biking too!). Get out there and enjoy it. See you on the trail.

"the only problem is the dirt bikes" What kind of statement is that. Oh im sorry is the forest yours and you shouldnt have to share natures beauty with motorized bikes right. You people...sigh.

One of the best places to ride in Mass. Tons of trails to choose from with varying degrees of difficulty. The park is split into two distinct sections, which are connected by trails. Park near the Ranger station and the trails are rockier and contain less hills. "Breakneck" trail has the steepest downhill and most challenging climb. The Ledge area on the other side of the park has the best trails. Try the trail known as the "time trials", its mostly hardpack with sharp banked turns that you can fly on. Anywhere in the park you can easily link 10-15 miles of single track with limited riding on fire roads. Trail maps can be found at the Ranger station. The only downsde is the dirt bikes in the summer and the hunters in the Fall.
