Ride Summary:
This is a relatively easy ride, though its length will challenge most beginners. The trail is quite easy with gentle ups and downs totaling no more than 500 feet of climbing throughout the ride.

Trail Description:
The trail does have a few slightly challenging points. There are a couple rocky and sandy parts to the trail, though nothing serious. The trail follows along the shoreline of the reservoir offering countless views of the water.

From the end of the cul-de-sac, find the trail and turn right onto the singletrack.

Stay on the shoreline trail #1609.

At the East end of the lake, you will pass a ditch. Turn left here across a bridge. Then turn left again.

When you reach the gravel road (FS 2220) turn left and ride across Mason Dam.

Follow FS 2220 out to OR 7. Turn left on OR 7 and after .5 miles turn left again into the Mason Dam viewpoint and Boat Ramp.

Ride down towards the water and turn right onto the singletack.

The trail will change to a paved trail as it passes through the Union Creek Campground.

.4 miles past the boat ramp, find a singletack trail to the left.

When you reach FS 300. This is the turn around point.

If you want, you can make a loop out of this ride by going .5 miles up FS 300 to OR 7 then turn left and go about 2.3 miles and turn left again onto Hudspeth Lane. Turn left onto FS 2220 after 1.2 miles and then be back at your car after .5 miles more.

How to get there:
From I-84 take exit #304. Follow the signs for Baker City. After about 1 mile, turn left onto Main Street/OR 7. Follow OR 7 south for about 23 miles. Turn left onto Hudspeth lane. After 1.2 miles turn left again onto FS 2220 towards the South Shore Campground. After .5 miles turn left onto FS 480 into the campground. (It is usually easiest to park here.) From here follow the campground road east to the end of the cul-de-sac. This is where the trail begins.

For a shorter ride at Phillips Reservoir, try the Deer Lick Lollipop. Follow directions south out of Baker City on Hwy. 7, but turn left on Black Mountain Road and proceed to trail head on far side of Mason Dam (this is at the East end of the reservoir; directions in trail guide start you on the West end). Follow shoreline singletrack until you reach the sign for the Deer Lick trail, which heads upslope from the shoreline trail. The trail loops upslope and back down; hand a right where it rejoins the shoreline trail and return to your car. This is a quick hour ride with a couple of short, steep ptiches.NOTE: THIS TRAIL IS INDISTINCT AT POINTS, BUT EASY TO FOLLOW. Local riders are talking with the Forest Service about improvements to trail for Summer 2002.For other riding ideas in the Baker City area, contact Flagstaff Sports or e-mail me at markfurman@hotmail.com
