Trail Description:
This trail is in awesome shape. Fast smooth singletrack with the occasional shallow creek crossing. It gets a little hairy with some sharp, short climbs and descents later in to the ride, but for the most past is rolling and fast. Follows the Lewis river for it's entire length. Beautiful scenery. A classic all-singletrack WA rollercoaster.

How to get there:
Get off I-5 at the Woodland/Cougar exit and take 503 towards Mt. St. Helens. Pick up a map at the tourist information (follow the signs, west side of I-5). Go through Cougar and head in to the park. The road changes names from 503 to park road 90. Continue on past the Pine Creek Ranger station to the trail head (Lewis River Trail, No. 31). Monument passes are required to park at the trailheads. They can be purchased at several spots on you way there.

This trail is in GREAT shape. It's an advanced trail, not for beginners. But for those wanting a workout and amazing single track with a couple nice skinnies on downed trees, this is a worthy destination. Some steep climbs, but they're short.

Called the station on 3/20 and was told that the trail is still snowed in.

Trail is in good shape as of 12/11. Did the entire length without seeing anyone!

The blow down from the winter has been mostly cleared, at least it's not a bike lifting fest. A big landslide has completely taken the trail out in one spot, the FS has put up flagging and the bushwack isn't too bad. The landslide is far from any trailhead and big so don't look for it to change any time soon. trail in good shape overall, worth doing

The trail is currently in bad shape after a wet winter. There are numerous downed trees and some of the trail has washed away (a very short section). It looks like some people have already started to work on cleaning it up. It's going to be a lot of work. I have been on the trail in past years and it has been fantastic.

I just did this trail 11/6/05 and I would suggest that if you ride this trail during hunting season you wear a hunter orange vest. As I was entering the trail a hunter threatened to shoot me. I also saw about 10 hunters actually on the trail, I didn't know you could hunt on a well traveled hiking trail but I guess you can. I would suggest to all mountain bike riders that if you ride during this time of year, check the hunting seasons, where people hunt and wear a bright orange vest or something. Other than that the trail is great with some good drops, climbs and downhill spots. The water, mud and wet leaves adds a fun challenge to everything.

This trail is in great shape.Roller coaster type trail with smooth singletrack and whoop-de-do type sections.Had to rescue a woman who broke her leg going off one of the steep climbs 7-9 miles in.Well, I didn't really rescue her but i stayed with her awhile while her girlfriend rode and got help with the forest service. But you'll be glad to know that i did rescue her bike!

just to keep the record straight, the lewis river trailhead is about 10 miles east of the closest border to mt. st. helen's national volcanic monument. a monument pass won't allow you to park at the trailhead, rather a northwest forest pass is what you want (though the latter will serve to get you into the monument if you wanna go there.) also, check a map before following these directions. they're right, but a little vague. that said, this trail KICKS ASS! just read on...

Awesome trail! In great shape, beautiful scenery. I went on Labor Day and only saw two other groups on the 10 miles I rode (from Curly Creek to where trail crosses Road 90). If you're a beginner (like me) and out of shape (like me), you will be tired at the end of your ride. Trail is fairly easy with some steep parts where I had to walk my bike up.

Excellent trail, takes about 2-3 hours depending on your level of skill. You have a joyce of riding it out and back vs. as a loop, if you are willing to ride about 8 miles on pavement. It is fairly rolling with the exception of a few technical sections. Have fun!
