Trail Description:
A nice weekend trail that has some real fun stuff but also some very challenging spots. But for the most part this trail system has something for everyone. There is something to suit every skill level, Beginner to expert
How to get there:
It is on the corner of Dundee Rd. and Quentin Rd. In Palatine, Illinois

This is the second JOle I've seen next to saying that Busse woods has single track. I workout in these to forest preserves many hours a year and neither of them has any REAL MTB. Deer grove does have a small group trying to make legal trails but come on rate them realistically. I've used this sight to plan MTB trips W/ my wife and the ratings and descriptions you guys are writting are way off from what is out there nationally. I hate wasting my time traveling to a real MTB destination and stopping off at one of these misdiscribed trails and finding something like busse woods or a very so-so MTB trail like deer grove.
GET real!!!!

deer grove is the pretty sick for biking, i go there almost every week, you just have to watch out for hikers/walkers. they have about 5 planks going overs rivers , at the begining of one trail they have a sweet downhill "course(its only like 100 yards long)" and later in the trail there is another sweet downhill course (like 10 yards), if you want to get muddy COME HERE!
if you can check it out its awsome!
PS: allways stay with the river, then it means you are on the right trail and it leads out some where

There are some good trails at Deer Grove. the area
that's fenced off was closed due to severe erosion
problems. there is still a fair amount of singletrack
(6 miles?), and it's pretty good stuff, mostly tight
twisty singletrack with some good log piles a few
skinny plank bridges and a very few small drops (ie
< 2 ft). fun, but there are two problems: First, most
of it is technically illegal, and second, much of it is
extremely muddy and wet most of the year, so if
you don't mind riding "illegal" trails, and the trails
around your place are dry and dusty, then DG might
be a good place to give a try. please don't ride on
the trails when they are wet, it only exaterbates the
problems

The cook county forest preserve removed many of the single track. They put wide lime stone paths instead. They also put up fences around most of the single track that was there. If they thought it would be safer. They are dead wrong the trail is more dangerous.

these are the best trails in the northwest suburban area of chicago. the "ravines" area is currently(jan 2004) being fenced off because of the heavy off-trail use by riders, but this is a small area of the preserve.

Best bet for anyone that has a GPS mounted to your Mountain Bike, helps you get back to you car so your not worried where the path takes you. Use the single tracks, it has signs posted that the trail is used for MB's, down towards the basin(if you can find it, somwhere in the middle of everything)but some trails are really challenging. With quick turns and up's and down's you will be sore after riding. Fall riding is quite interesting with all the leaves(which make traction quite demanding)and colors it is motivating riding.

The whole basin area is now closed to bikers. There is even a big sign, with diagrams, describing how bikers destroy the terrain. It looked serious enough that I didn't ride it even though the trails were frozen solid.
