Fun ride, but I reccomend going on a dry, but off-season (Late Fall to Early Spring) day during the week. If you are obeying the unwritten, courteous, rules of the trail, if not those of the park, I doubt anyone is going to complain. I generally don't even go in there if there are more than a few cars in the lot. All of the hikers I have encountered there have been extremely friendly to bikers. Please don't contribute to the erosion in this beautiful park by riding the single track when the ground is wet. Stick to the recommended trails for biking on rainy and high-use days. Hit the overlook if you get a chance!

I use to ride there all the time before they closed the trails to mt. biking. It was a great place to ride and enjoy the outdoors. If more people knew how to break without skidding the erosion wouldn’t be so bad. Its weird how erosion is such a problem there but not on the millions of miles of trails all over the country. Maybe the weekend warriors that come up from the city for the weekends are worried about spraining an ankle while walking there pocket dogs. It’s to bad people cant accept the help the mt. bikers offer to maintain the trails so they could stay open to them. I guess I am just sorry to see another great place close. (Its a 5 if you break the rules.)

Steep Rock Foundation generously allows people to use their property for walking, biking, skiing, etc. It is a beautiful site. There are some trails that aren't suitable for bikes because of the erosion they can cause. Why can't you respect their wishes? Too selfish? Ignorant? Both?

I have recently rode up Steep Rock, although it is "not allowed." It was a tough ride up as my friend and I were riding through a rain storm but on a dry day, it would be a nice ride(Besides the risk of getting being fined). The top has a great view overlooking the Shepaug River. I suggest going up during a rainy day, although more difficult, there will be less people and less of a chance to be caught biking on the trails. Lots of side trials so try to stick to the main trails...I didn't seem to know that i wasnt on the right trail at the time....

you used to be able to ride the singletrack at steep rock, but it is "not allowed" any longer. Mtn biking is allowed only on the service roads, which are pretty flat and easy. You risk getting a ticket if caught on the singletrack... it's not worth it.

This rating stems only in respect to the New Rules for Steep Rock Reservation - Mountain Bikes are no longer allowed on any of the real trails, only on Tunnel Road and River Road. I don't know how well these new rules are enforced, and I wish that there were some trails we could "legally" ride, but out of respect for the work and time put in by the Steep Rock Asociation, I seek other areas to really play hard. (PS I know I spelled Asociation wrong, but the computer wouldn't let me spell it right because of the first three letters)

all the good single track was closed back in 1998 even after a large group of mountain bikers helped on several trail maintance days. A slap in the face I'd say
