Trail Description:
This trail is great for working on your climbing and desending skills. The climbs are steep and long and you need to have some aerobic background to finish the hills without stopping. When desending you better be quick to navigate sharp turns and small obstacles or you be thrown off the course. This trail has definitely helped me improve my biking skill.

How to get there:
Take 95N to 195E (use Catonsville exit). Go towards Catonsville and then follow the Park and Ride directions. You will enter a large parking lot. Follow other bikers to the trails.

This trail is actually in MD. You can hit 20+ miles of trail in the Avalon area without repeating if you work both sides of the river. The trails continue to improve year after year as local riders and the park replace eroded sections with sustainable singletrack. Besides the trail in Avalon, You can also do a 50 mile epic dubbed the Tour de Patapsco. It stretches from Avalon to McKeldin on mostly trail A route guide for that can be found at: http://www.singlespeedoutlaw.com/main/articles/tourdepatapsco.shtml

All true. Super trails with a good mix of technical single track and rolling terrain. One or two decent hills though as pointed out below there are no good long up hills though the ridge trail has a little ball-buster to start with. All in all a great sequence of trail loops that can easily be pieced together for whatever sort of ride you're into. Good call on the rain days below.....respect the trails, it would be a shame to loose them.

First I must say I love how this trail is posted twice. People need to know that this section of Patapsco is divided up into several areas: Avalon, Hilltop, Hilton, and Orange grove. Orange grove and Hilltop (the tire park) have many long steep climbs followed by aggressive and steep downhils. Awsome riding. One trail that not many people know about (it is not on any maps) it on that meest up with ridge trail (in avalon) and goes all the way to landing road where it meets up with the begining of the yellow trail. Its a definite to go check out. Everyone i have taken on it has loved it. I have said it before and i will say it again Patapsco is not for beginners.

John boy, i'd like to know which trails you hit here, and what other trails yo bad-ass rides that makes this look like a beginner place. patapsco has a great variety of trails with tight, rocky, rooty climbs and descents. so there aren't too long climbs...just rides the other climbs twice hard ass.

Hey Dave, I have to disagree with you. It's a perfect place for beginners. I've seen MUCH worse. My big complaint is that there's no long hill climbs (+1 mile) in the place.

1. There is about 25+ miles of trails here. Not 15.2. If your a weekend warrior, stay away! I have been riding here for 8 years, and even though I make it everytime, the hill that leads to the second entrance past the park and ride still winds me at times. This is without a doubt a place that only intermediate and above should attempt-if your really into a 3-4 hour ride.

I am very new to mountain biking but people tell me it is one of the best places to ride on the east coast. I probably shouldn't say this because it is already too crowded on weekends. I've heard that it is a possible location for the 2012 Olympics (trail gossip or truth?). I believe it too because I have seen these fancy little bikers who think they can ride, with there cute little outfits and $2,000+ bikes. They can't even touch the skills that I have developed in only 3 months on my cheap piece of crap, but I do ride almost everyday in the most trecherous trails in the park. Its hilarious. I guess I'm lucky that I only live 2 miles from one of the many secret entrances to the park.
