From the parking area next to the I-15 freeway, you ride the two-way paved trail under the freeway to the Lakeside trail head. You can either go left and stay on the fire road or make a short but steep climb up to the Escondido City sewer right of way. This is all dirt and much less crowded that the fire road. Take this until you see a single track that dips into a grove. Watch out for poisin oak. Its all along the single track. This single track will take you through a small water crossing to another short but steep climb. More single track fun. Follow the single track, it drops you back on the fire road. Follow the fire road down to the lake parking area. You're half way, turn around and ride back the way you came.

How to get there:
Via Rancho Parkway exit off 15 north. This trailhead is just east of the freeway behind the Shell and Chevron stations

Additional Notes:
Watch our for horses!

Hodges is definetly a fun ride, but: best trail in San Diego? No way. Anyone who's been on Noble Canyon or Sweetwater would agree Cookware Sets

Bernardo trail has many features that make it one of the most challenging trails in SD. The climb to the peak of the mountain has some nearly impossible climbs and some that are literally impossible but we always try! Coming down the peak only is usually only about 15 minutes but going up takes a good 1.5-2hrs. I like to start at the Lake by the Mexican Restaurant, go all the way to the top of the peak and then to the mall and back. It's about 13.5 and about half steep vs level. Beautiful ride.

I used to ride this trail every day. There is a section where it gets really rocky about half way up the mountain. Right there is a spot I saw on a reality show where someone was trying to traverse the serious rocks in a deep canyon in a turn. This is one of the most challenging trails I have ever ridden. Can't find the video but it's one of those reality shows that show people getting hurt. Lake Hodges bike trail is on TV!

This trail tested me. First time out in years on a trail. Trail starts off easy riding, then progresses up fairly steep and narrow. Great ride!

This is the best trail in San Diego, Park by the the North County Fair mall, and ride south twards hodges. Take that west all the way to the damn, it's about 8 miles, a good climb in the beginning then downhill, some pavement, then some of the best single track in San Diego, all the way to the damn. It's crowded on weekends. If you go during the week in the afternoons sometimes you'll get the trail to yourself. Another good ride is from the 15 in the beginning once you go under the 15 you come up to some cement posts and the trail goes left or up a short climb, if you go up the hill you'll follow a trail below some houses, that takes you to bernardo mtn. This trail is hard and a super difficult climb, when dropping down into the creek be cautious of poison oak. If you crash in the bushes you've landed in it. It's only near the creek. The bernardo mtn ride isn't as much fun as riding to the damn unless you're into torturing yourself. You'll

Great trail for beginners! Now that the lake is pretty much all dried up you can ride right up to the the water. The trail running next to Lake Drive there is a little off trail that you can bonze all the way to the lake front. Very rocky but super fast on the way down.
