Trail Description:
This trail is a beautiful ride that stretches across Missouri from St. Charles County (near St. Louis, MO) to Henry County (near Clinton, MO). It was built on the former Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad line. The ride gives you wonderful scenery from wooden bridges and tree covered areas, wildlife such as squirrels, rabbits and deer to a soothing ride beside the Missouri river. It's a wonderful trip to relax and enjoy yourself on!
Cyclist can enjoy many portions of the trail from it's many entry points. Being a railroad grade trail it's great for beginners. For the masochist wanting a challenge, the trail can be done in its entirety.
How to get there:
There are many access points because the trail is so many miles long. From Columbia the best way to access this trail is from the MKT Fitness trail off of Forum Blvd.

The Katy Trail is immense. There's a lot to do and see. I found a guidebook for the Katy Trail and a guide to Mountain Biking in Missouri at pebblepublishing.com. "Show-Me Mountain Biking" by Brett Dufur - full of information. Hope that's helpful - your site has been!

I have lived in Columbia for two years and last weekend was the first time I have made it down to the Katy Trail. My trip took me through the Hinkson Creek Trail to the MKT to the Katy Trail up to Rocheport. I must say my reaction to the Katy Trail was "WOW." It was maybe one of most spectacular settings I have seen, it ranks right up there with Philmont Scout Ranch. The trail is strait, level. The bluffs are amazing. The amount of wildlife was surprisingly bountiful. If a biker is looking for a rugged trail, this is not it. If you are looking for a very nice, relaxing ride, this is it. I highly recommend it.
And for the comment made by Pizza Man about the river being muddy, it is called, and has been called forever, The Big Muddy. The river does not smell. The river adds to the Katy Trail setting alot.

The KATY ranks up there with the Mickelson in SD with double the overall distance. The 224 miles can be ridden in 2 days but it is best to take at least 3. The trail is a hard packed fine gravel with maximum grades of 5%. Is best to run a mountain bike with 26X1.5/1.25 kevlar belted smoother, city type (not bald) tires. The lower rolling resistance will gain you at least 5MPH average over that of the wider knobby tires. If you take a road bike take plenty of tubes. My favorite part of the trail runs from Boonville to Hartsburg, is a good 76 mile round day trip and in my opinion is the most scenic section of the trail. This section also includes the spur that leads to Columbia if you need some extra miles. Always check wind direction if planning a one way trip. Happy trails.

This trail is good for a day ride, as there are many trailheads. One of the other good features is that there are plenty of restaurants, bars, wineries, and even my favorite (Agusta Brewing Co. http://www.augustabrewing.com) along the way. A real fun ride if you are near Saint Louis.

Riders with little experience should always start their trip into the wind. Winds along the River can be quite strong, and can wear out even experienced riders trying to return against them.

I don't know about pizza mans "seenery" but the scenery on the trail isn't bad at all. Some of the bluffs are spectacular. The river IS muddy, but majestic nonetheless.

Okay, I've never been on this trail, but having lived in Missouri all my life I can tell you that the Missouri river is not good for seenery. It is the ugliest, most disgusting river you will ever see. However, I hope that you enjoy the rest of the trail. <>< :-)
